What is recorded here
Killanully hides a curving passage beneath a rath, built with posts, panels and drystone walls before human memory reached it. The quarry men broke through in 1992, exposing eleven metres of narrow chamber where charcoal, animal bone and mollusc shells had settled through five separate fills. Perhaps people descended there to keep secrets, store treasure or simply watch the dark return their shape. They left the passage closed, not forgotten, waiting for the ground to give way and reveal what it had swallowed.
In the SW quadrant of a rath (CO086-048----). This Man-made underground passage was discovered during the excavation of the rath in 1992 in advance of an expansion of a limestone quarry; it was subsequently excavated. It consisted of a single curving passage (L 11.3m; Wth 0.96m; H c. 1m), 1.85m below the present ground level. The S section of the passage was described as being of 'post and panel construction' while the N part was composed of drystone-walling with a few orthostats placed near the entrance (ibid.). Only one roof lintel remained in situ. It had been placed on a stack of drystone-walling. The Man-made underground passage had been backfilled in the past and contained five separate fills with occasional inclusions of animal bone, molluscs and charcoal. (Mount 1992; Mount 1993, 10)
