Man-made underground passage in Haggardstown

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under Haggardstown in County Louth, a man-made passage descends into darkness, local tradition claims. People whispered about what the tunnel contained or whether it connected to another place entirely. Some refused to enter, certain the earth would swallow them. Others walked in curious, carrying oil lamps and expecting discovery. The passage remains unexplained, preserving the moment human boldness met unknown depth.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of a Man-made underground passage. (CLAJ 1934, 210-11).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
