Underground passages once cut into the east and south ramparts of a Cork ringfort, forming shallow semicircles about fourteen feet across. Bowman saw them in 1934 before ploughs and time erased the fort itself. They may have been cellars, hideouts or simply clever uses of excavated earth, but their shape suggests purpose rather than accident.

In ringfort (CO023-06001-). Bowman (1934, 191) noted that 'on the east and south sides of the inner rampart, and on the fosse side of it, were Man-made underground passages built into the rampart. These are now practically destroyed. Each formed, approximately, a semicircle, the chord being c. 14ft'. Also in interior of fort on S side, he recorded a 'depression - the site of a Man-made underground passage' (ibid.). Ringfort levelled; no visible surface trace.
