Gortalassa hides a man-made passage beneath a Kerry rath, where two large slabs still mark the entrance and collapsed section. Local memory describes stone steps, clay walls and a roof built from slabs, suggesting people shaped the dark rather than merely discovering it. The passage may have served as a refuge, a boundary marker or a forgotten household chamber, but its true purpose has faded beneath the grass. What remains is a hollow under an ancient field, waiting for someone brave enough to listen for echo.

In a rath (KE093-003----). A large slab near the centre of the rath and another 6m to the W, are said to cover the entrance to the Man-made underground passage and part of the collapsed passage, respectively. According to local information, this Man-made underground passage was accessed via stone steps and had clay walls and a slab-built roof.
