Gortacurraun holds two collapsed underground passages inside separate ringforts, and a brass shilling of James II surfaced in one of them. The valley stretches south from Ballynasare to Minard beach, giving the hidden chambers a long drop toward the sea. Whichever fort kept the coin, someone pressed it into dark earth and walked away, leaving the metal to wait out centuries of rain and forgetting.

Circular univallate rath KE044-106---- is situated at the head of the valley that extends S from Ballynasare to Minard beach. A number of depressions and holes in the interior appear to be the remains of a Man-made underground passage (KE044-106001-), now collapsed. A brass shilling of James II was discovered in a Man-made underground passage in a rath in this townland (O'Sullivan 1931, 414). Apart from the possible Man-made underground passage at this site, one was also discovered in another ringfort (KE044-100----) in the townland, and it is not known in which of the two the shilling was found.
