Man-made underground passage in Glenaphuca

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under Rathcanning in County Cork, a hidden chamber shaped like a beehive waited beneath the soil, perhaps holding breath or memory for centuries. People dug through earth and stone to reach it, believing what lay below deserved witness. The passage still disappears into glen and grass, inviting imagination to fill its dark rooms.
'Many years ago an underground pasage, and an underground beehive-shaped chamber, were discovered a quarter of a mile south of Rathcanning fort' (CO066-01001-) (Barry 1897, 41-2). Exact location not known. Recorded also by McCarthy (1977, 306-7), under townland of Rathcanning. According to Barry the ogham stone (CO066-009---) came from this Man-made underground passage though in later reports (Macalister 1945, ; O'Kelly 1945, 19-20) it is associated with a Man-made underground passage (CO066-01002-) within Rathcanning fort. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
