Man-made underground passage in Glaspistol

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Glaspistol holds a man-made underground passage near Castlecoo Hill, preserving the hidden shape of human effort beneath an ordinary Irish landscape. Local tradition still calls the site a cave, suggesting people once recognised the tunnel before modern surveying gave it a name. The passage may have served as shelter, storage or a quiet route through difficult terrain, while uncertainty keeps its exact purpose alive.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of a 'cave' near Castlecoo Hill. Probably same site as LH022-015----.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
