Man-made underground passage in Caltragh (tireragh By., Rathmacurkey Ed)

In pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope on the W side of a shallow valley. Exposed in section on the slope is the entrance to a Man-made underground passage passage which extends W into the slope. The opening (Wth 0.6m N–S; H 0.35m) is flanked by two upright rounded stones (Wth 0.3-0.35m N–S; H 0.35m) which support a massive lintel boulder (L 1.25m N–S; Wth 0.45m E–W; H 0.48m). The back or W edge of the lintel is partly embedded in the slope but otherwise the lintel is largely exposed and projects from the hill slope. The two side stones extend for 0.5m to W into the passage. Beyond this point, the walls of the passage are constructed of rough drystone walling, 2-3 courses in height, topped with stone lintels.
