What is recorded here
Ballymascanlan church stood above a hidden passage in 1835, but the entrance vanished before 1966. The land kept its secret, denying even measured boots the truth of its shape. Perhaps people forgot the way down, or perhaps the earth simply closed its mouth.
A 'cave' is marked immediately S of the S boundary of Ballymascanlan church (LH007-017001-) on the 1835 'OS 6-inch' map. No trace of it was visible in 1966 when inspected by ASI.
