Saint Mary's Church (Ballymascanlan)

Freestanding Board of First Fruits style Church of Ireland church, built c. 1820. Cruciform-plan, engaged square-plan two-stage tower to west, stepped castellated parapet, stone corner finials. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, replacement tiles and slates to south transept, raised gables, stone verge coping, cast-iron gutters. Painted roughcast-rendered walling, tie-beam plates to tower. Pointed arch window openings, dressed stone hood mouldings, shouldered stops, tooled stone chamfered reveals, splayed sills, timber tracery windows, leaded plain glazed panes; roundels to transept gables, painted timber frames, fixed quatrefoil panes; pointed-arch opening to east, tooled stone voussoirs, dressed stone block-and-start surround, dressed stone tracery, leaded stained glass panes, metal security grille; pointed-arch opening to tower belfry, stone sills, painted timber louvres. Pointed arch door openings, tooled stone moulded surrounds, painted timber horizontally sheeted doors, stone threshold, concrete steps to east elevation. Interior with limestone flagged floor, raised timber floor to side aisles, encaustic tiles to chancel dedicated to John Thomas Warren, incumbent 1851-1897. Painted smooth rendered walling, commemorative plaques, stained glass tracery window to chancel; timber scissor-braced trussed roof, smooth rendered ceiling, timber gallery to west dated 1849, timber pulpit to north, organ to south, cast-iron bell and assorted masonry elements displayed in porch. Set within graveyard to north, south and east, vertical and horizontal grave markers.

This historic church plays an important role in the religious life of the parish of Ballymascanlon. The pleasing proportions are enhanced by the fine tower and ornate stained glass. The beautifully crafted gallery is of particular note.
