Man-made underground passage in Ballylangy

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Ballylangy holds a stone chamber hidden beneath its northern ringfort, visible only through a crack opened when a lintel shifted. The passage remains closed to entry, forcing imagination to do the work of walking. It may have served as a cellar, a refuge or a forgotten ritual space, but the chamber itself refuses to explain. What is known is that human hands built it, soil covered it, and time waited patiently for someone curious enough to look through the gap.
In N half ringfort (CO136-090001-). Displacement of lintel caused small opening through which stone-built chamber visible. Inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
