What is recorded here

Five earth-cut chambers and a long passage still hide beneath the overgrown Ardgroom Outward ringfort. McCarthy measured barrel-vaulted rooms no higher than a crouching person, with a seven-metre crawl leading east into the fosse. The dimensions suggest people moved through darkness, perhaps storing tools, hiding during storms or reaching another part of the fort without crossing open ground.

E side ringfort (CO102-00801-) (O'Halloran 1916, 165). Investigated by McCarthy (1977, 141-143) who described 5 earth-cut sub-rectangular chambers with barrel-vaulted ceilings. Average dims. L 2.5m: Wth 1.2m; H 0.7m. Wall recesses in chambers 1,3 and 4; construction shafts in chambers 3 and 4. Long passage (L 7.6m; Wth 0.9m; H 0.8m) extends E from chamber 2, opening into fosse. Ringfort now overgrown but two entrances were noted, one in SW quadrant, the other on ext. face SW bank. O'Shea and Crowley (1972, 78) mention three internal entrances, two more into fosse (one blocked). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
