What is recorded here

Two earthen banks circle a twenty-metre yard in County Louth, their funnelled entrance and split-level floor marking a human-made chamber rather than a casual hollow. The northern section holds a collapsed underground passage, perhaps a hidden route for people, goods or ideas when the land above belonged to someone else. A modern wall now overlays part of the outer bank, and a neighbouring enclosure adjoins the site, reminding us that the boundary between ancient and present remains porous.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (int. diam. 20.5m) enclosed by two widely spaced earthen banks. Inner bank (Wth 5m, H 0.2m internally, 2.3m externally) with traces of both internal and external stone facings. The outer bank (Wth 2.8m, H 0.3m internally, 0.9m externally) is overlain in the W quadrant by a modern wall. The space between the two banks varies (Wth 6.5m-13m). Entrance at the SE represented by gap in both banks with two radial banks running across the intervening space between the banks to create a funnel effect. Another radial bank crosses the intervening space between the banks at the NW. Split-level interior divided by V-shaped drystone-faced scarp (H 0.7m). N section of interior contains collapsed Man-made underground passage (LH008-013002-). Sub-rectangular enclosure (LH008-013003-) (int. dims. 40m N-S, 36m E-W), possibly modern, enclosed by earthen bank adjoining site at SE.
