Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland gave birth to Louis Lipsett on 14 June 1874, beginning a life that would span Indian frontiers, Boer trenches and Canadian divisions before ending at Saulzoir. The small town does not need to explain itself through one soldier, yet it produced a man who kept taking commands others refused to hold. He died less than a month before the war stopped, which means Ballyshannon gave the world both a general and a final warning about how late such men are lost.
