Long Strand Bridge

Single-arch road bridge, built c.1870, spanning Long Strand River. Segmental-headed arch with tooled limestone voussoirs and soffit, springing from dressed vertical rubble limestone piers rising to parapets with dressed limestone coping stones. Inscribed benchmark to east elevation of western parapet. Battered rubble stone retaining wall to north of bridge continuing along river bank.

Spanning the Long Strand River that is fed from the north by Kilkeran Lake, this well-executed bridge was the first bridge to span the river. Its fine rubble stone walls and tooled limestone voussoirs are clearly the work of skilled masons.
