Lisnagleragh

On top of a low ridge (long axis NE-SW) in pasture, with good views in all directions, particularly to SE. Depicted and named ‘Lisnagleragh’ on all OS historic mapping. A circular area (diam. 32m) defined by a substantial flat-topped earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 2.6m; Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 7.7m). Mature beech trees align the bank with small thorn trees in between. A causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) is located at ESE, being very well defined and potentially faced on the northern side. Intermittent livestock tracks and low gaps are evident elsewhere. The outer fosse (Wth at base 1.6m; overall Wth 2.7m; D 0.2m) is visible E-WSW and is choked with briars for the most part. Lisnagleragh, Kiltanon is a circular early-medieval ringfort, likely dating to between the 6th and 10th centuries, situated on a low ridge with strategic views. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy dwellings, and it may have been regarded as a place of supernatural significance in folklore.
