Lismore

Raised circular area (int. diam. 34.6m) enclosed by the remains of an outer earthen bank, a wide deep intermediate fosse and substantial inner earthen bank. Corresponding breaks in banks with accompanying causeway at E probably represents original entrance. A second apparently original entrance occurs at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Lismore, Lismore Demesne is a well-preserved early-medieval ringfort, likely dating to between the 6th and 10th centuries, characterized by a raised circular area with multiple defensive earthworks. Local tradition associates the site with the ancient Kingdom of Deise and, in folklore, with fairy activity due to its mysterious and isolated nature.
