Lisheen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lisheen is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Carrowbaun (ballintober South By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. It appears as a subrectangular enclosure abutting an east-west lane on the 1837 map and as a sub-triangular field on the 1914 map, though both label the place Lisheen in gothic lettering. The site sits on a slight south-facing slope but remains hidden beneath pasture at ground level.
Marked as a subrectangular enclosure (dims c. 55m N-S; c. 45m E-W) abutting onto an E-W lane at N on the 1837 ed. and as a sub-triangular field (dims c. 100m E-W; c. 50m N-S at W) on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, but named 'Lisheen' in gothic lettering on both. Situated on a slight S-facing slope, it is not visible at ground level in pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
