Lena Rice invented the forehand smash at Marlhill, the green garden where she first struck balls beside her sister Anne. She carried that sudden, decisive force into the 1890 Wimbledon final, using it on the match-winning point against May Jacks. A girl from a small Irish house gave the game one of its most recognizable moves, then disappeared from tournament records after her mother died.
