Lecarrow Fort

In pasture, on top of a high NE-SW ridge (200ft) with excellent views of the surrounding landscape, including Rosslara Lough to S. The land slopes down very steeply to NW and SE from the monument. It is depicted and named ‘Lecarrow Fort’ on all OS historic mapping. A roughly suboval area (17m NE-SW; 20m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen scarp (Wth 1.35m; H 0.45m) WNW-W and a very short portion of bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.75m; Wth at top 0.5m; Wth at base 3.5m) W-WNW. The enclosing elements are largely obscured by dense overgrowth. A linear earthen field boundary (long-axis NE-SW) is incorporated into the scarp at NW where the enclosing elements are more substantial (Wth 3.4m; H 1m). The remains of a second linear field boundary (long-axis NW-SE) are located c. 7m to NE. This boundary is very scant and is defined by a loose alignment of moss covered stones and intermittent trees. Both field boundaries are depicted on the 1842 and 1920 editions of the OS 6-inch map. The interior is largely obscured by dense briars. It is dish-shaped and has a SE-facing slope. Lecarrow Fort, Lecarrow North is a ringfort, likely dating to the early medieval period, situated on a prominent ridge with strategic views of the surrounding area. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, and they were often considered sacred or inhabited by otherworldly beings in Irish tradition.
