Ladys Well

The location of the original Lady's Well was in a field at the junction of Lady's Well Street and Bohereenglass. The present well, although channelled from the same stream as the original, is a recent monument erected at the junction of the main Dublin and Holycross roads. According to local information the original well was totally covered during the construction of a large housing development on the site during the 1950s. Linked to a tradition of healing and local veneration, Lady's Well is associated with Saint Brigid or a local "lady" figure, common in Celtic folklore, and was historically visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for women's ailments. The site reflects a blend of Christian and pre-Christian traditions, with wells often seen as portals to the Otherworld in Irish folklore.
