Nine minutes of failed phone calls and a blocked checkpoint turned a mistaken target into a fireball inside a crowded room. The Provisional Irish Republican Army believed they struck a military meeting, but four hundred and fifty diners and staff filled the La Mon House when the incendiary bomb exploded near Belfast on 17 February 1978. Twelve people died, thirty were injured, and many suffered terrible burns before help reached them.
