Craig and Garner (1975, 90) describe Knocklofty as 'extremely complex, being rebuilt and added to at different periods. The original house appears to have been a narrow, seven-bay, three-story block with end stacks. This still rises in the centre, but was rebuilt in the early 19th century to hold a two-storey library and the main staircase. This part of the house is rendered and has a blocking course. The wings that flank the house are largely late-18th century'. Bence-Jones (1988, 179) dates the house to the 18th century as does The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage which gives a date of c. 1790 for the original house.
