Knocklofty Bridge

Three-arch rubble limestone hump back road bridge over river, c.1770. Random rubble limestone walls with lime mortar, cut-stone triangular cut-waters to piers to south, and cut-stone coping to parapets. Series of three elliptical arches with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs, and squared rubble stone soffits having lime mortar, and traces of lime render over. Sited spanning River Suir with grass banks to river.

An attractive bridge, attributable to Thomas Ivory (d. 1786), forming a prominent landmark on the River Suir on the approach into County Waterford from the west (County Tipperary). The profile of the arches (raised to the centre accommodating the hump back profile), together with the slender piers, enhance the elegant quality of the composition, and identifies the technical interest of the site. Fine detailing to the stone work provides subtle decoration, and augments the design quality of the bridge.
