Knockkelly Castle is a five-storey limestone tower in County Tipperary, built in the late 1500s and remodelled around 1600 into a comfortable residence with mullioned windows, fireplaces and diagonal chimney stacks. Its walls still hold a murder-hole, machicolation and spiral staircase, while a later house scarred the south wall and blocked the old entrance. The castle is partly ruined now, but every age is visible in its stone: defence, fashion and forgetting stacked together on the hilltop.
