What is recorded here
Kilknockan Castle belonged to Nicholas Everard of Fethard in 1640, yet agricultural development erased its last low walls decades ago. The farm road now bisects the forgotten site, reducing a recorded stronghold to gentle undulations in level pasture. What remains is not stone but absence, a clean wound in the land where human ambition once stood before being smoothed into forgetfulness.
The Civil Survey (1654-6) records 'Nicholas Everard of Fethard Esqr.' as being the proprietor in 1640 and 'the sd lands hath on it a small castle' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 189). In level pasture, to NW of Kilknockan Hill. There is no visible surface trace at ground level. Named 'Castle site of' and bisected by farm road (long-axis WNW-ESE) on 1843 and latest edition OS 6-inch map. Gentle undulations presently exist in pasture fields to N and S of farm road, but are more likely related to associated earthworks (TS070-011003-). According to local information, low remains of castle walls (H c. 0.5m) survived until c. 40 years ago when levelled out. The castle was no longer visible in 1982 (Cahill) when the remains had been 'cleared for agricultural development in recent years'. Earthworks of the settlement (TS070-011----) are visible enclose to W and a church (TS070-01102-) is located c. 40m to the ESE.
