Knockbane

This circular cairn is situated in a prominent position on the N side of Lambay Island. It stands on the summit of a rock outcrop, the highest point on Lambay and overlooks the W end of the island. Its natural position exaggerates the scale of the monument (Diam. Base 27m, Top 4.10m , H 9m; ). The S face falls steeply and the N face falls to a natural ledge in the bedrock. It is grass covered with loose boulders visible. There are no kerbstones evident. It has a round profile with a narrow flat-top which may have been created when a trignometrical station was inserted (Westropp 1922, 70; Cooney 1993, 24-5). A transect of geophysical survey across the cairn did not reveal any internal structures (Cooney 2009, 160). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 31 December 2014

A Neolithic circular cairn; its location suggests it may have had ritual or funerary significance, possibly linked to early maritime or coastal settlement in the Irish Sea region.
