The road drops towards Kinnagoe Bay through Inishowen's green slopes, and suddenly a small Donegal beach is waiting below as if the hills have been keeping it to themselves. Then the story gets wonderfully bold: a Spanish Armada ship came to grief here in 1588, which is quite a dramatic interruption to a quiet day by the sea. Kinnagoe lies on the eastern side of the Inishowen Peninsula, near Carrowmenagh. Its beach has sand and pebbles, backed by steep land that makes the descent and the view memorable in equal measure. Pause somewhere safe at the top before driving down, if there is a suitable place to stop. From there the little bay feels sheltered and almost secret, but it is still an open coast, with weather and water to respect. Once on the shore, let the changing light on the hillside do some of the talking. I am rarely accused of silence, yet this view could manage it. The real history needs no extra treasure map from me. La Trinidad Valencera, a vessel in the Spanish Armada, was lost at Kinnagoe in 1588. National Museums Northern Ireland records objects from the wreck, including textiles and large siege guns; the Inishowen Maritime Museum says the ship arrived here in September, badly damaged and leaking. Divers from the City of Derry Sub-Aqua Club rediscovered the wreck in 1971. The museum story is more interesting than a tale of gold coins washing up at your feet, and it honours the people involved without turning their ordeal into a joke. It is tempting to imagine a sixteenth-century lookout on the hillside yelling that an entire Armada ship has arrived for the weekend. That lookout is my invention; the ship and wreck are real. What you can actually see today is the beach and sea, not a ship sitting on the sand waiting for its portrait. The wreck is an archaeological site offshore, so the visitor's pleasure is in understanding the place, watching the water and perhaps exploring the museum collections another day. Donegal keeps its history close to its scenery here, and gives both enough room to breathe. The visitor guide for Inishowen describes a winding, steep approach road and a small car park near the beach. Drive slowly, be ready to meet other traffic, and do not block the road if spaces are full. The guide lists no lifeguard or toilets and notes that access is limited by the descent. Bring what you need and take it away again. It lists swimming as an activity, but no lifeguard means you must judge conditions carefully and follow current warnings; a pleasant-looking bay is no guarantee of safe water. Shore walking and the view are plenty of reason to visit. Give yourself time for the journey down, a gentle look around and an unhurried climb back out. If the weather turns rough, admire Kinnagoe from a safe viewpoint and come another day. The hills will still be there, the wreck's story will still be astonishing, and I shall still be claiming that Donegal arranged the whole scene solely to make me say “wow.”

Kinnagoe Bay is a small sandy cove below steep slopes on east Inishowen. A plaque records the wreck of the Spanish Armada ship La Trinidad Valencera here on 16 September 1588; its remains were found in 1971.
