King of Tír Conaill's Burial Mound

Mound

What is recorded here

King of Tír Conaill's Burial Mound is a five-metre earthen ridge inside a hilltop enclosure in County Donegal, where local tradition still points to the buried body of a Tír Conaill king. The mound rises sharply on its east side at a break in the ground, marking the exact spot where human hands shaped the earth around a dead ruler. It is not a grand palace or a polished monument, but a quiet heap of soil that has waited out centuries of rain, grass and forgotten names.
In the NE sector of the interior of a hilltop enclosure (DG103-017001-) there is an earthen mound at a point where there is a change in ground level. The mound is c. 5m high on the E side. Local tradition says that the site is the burial place of a king of Tir Conaill. (Lacy 1833, 115, no. 704). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 December 2015
