Kiln in Doonmoon

In reclaimed pasture, 135m E of townland boundary with Elton, a hearth (LI040-279----) was excavated 235m to the SE. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Excavations by Christine Tarbett of a ring-ditch (LI040-108----) and pits (LI040-108001-) prior to the construction of the Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline revealed the following; ‘The kiln pit had a teardrop-shaped plan measuring c. 70cm in diameter, with an extended neck 60cm long which narrowed to 21cm. After removal of the several deposits of fill, a channel was found to extend from the neck into the base of the pit, forming a possible drafting flue. Several small sherds of Beaker pottery were recovered from the upper fill, which also contained some large, though disturbed stones.’ (Gowen 1988, 52-61; Tarbett, 1986) Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 21 June 2021
