A stone-lined , keyhole-shaped, corn-drying kiln was excavated in advance of the construction of the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. The kiln, which was aligned NE-SW, comprised a circular bowl (diam. 1.2m) at the SW end, a flue (L 2.4m; D 0.35-0.5m) and a hearth (1.6m x 0.8m) at the NE end. Deposits of oxidised clay and charcoal-rich soil were found at the base of the hearth and flue. Radiocarbon analysis of cereal grains recovered from the kiln returned a date range of AD 1058-1252.
