Kilmeen Church (Site of)

Church

What is recorded here

Kilmeen Church vanished beneath its own graveyard, leaving no wall or roof for anyone to touch. The 1842 map still marks the site in the centre of the graves, but the building has surrendered to the dead it served. What remains is a hole shaped like a church, holding every person who trusted it with their last days.
No visible surface trace of parish church of Kilmeen which is marked 'site of' in centre of graveyard (14542) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; this area now occupied by graves. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
