Kilhassen Burial Gd (Disused)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Kilhassen Burial Gd (Disused) is a rectangular grave yard on a south-facing slope in County Cork, enclosed by a 1.7m earthen bank and marked on the 1842 OS map as Kilsassanagh Grave Yard. It sits beside a Roman Catholic church at its west end, with overgrown ground and many grave markers still visible inside the bank. The place may have served as a quiet local burial site for generations before falling out of use, its boundary preserved more by memory and soil than by active care.
In pasture on S-facing slope. Marked 'Kilsassanagh Grave Yard' on OS 6-inch map (1842). Rectangular area (46m E-W; 18m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.7m). Interior overgrown; many grave markers noted. Roman Catholic church (CO110-047002-) at W end. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
