Killchilling Fort, meaning church of the holly, stood as a small circular enclosure on a SW-facing slope in County Cork. Human bones recovered from the site suggest it marked a burying ground rather than a ordinary home. Windele found the earthworks gone by 1850, swallowed by cultivation and forgotten, leaving only a standing stone and a hidden underground passage to hint at what the land once held.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope, within NE half of early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO041-04401-). Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) and named 'Kilcullin fort' on 1842 OS 6-inch map; marked 'Kilcullin fort (site of )' on 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. Circular area (diam. c. 18.5m) defined by low rise W->SE. Described by OS Field Book of 1839 as '''Killchilling Fort, church of the holly...a small fort, which it is considered was on a burying ground [CO041-04406-], on account of a good number of human bones having been got in it."' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 333). Windele recorded site as 'an old kile, which formed an oblong square, 16 to 20 paces broad, and somewhat longer' (ibid.). Windele revisited site in 1850 and recorded that the fort had disappeared and the area was under cultivation (ibid., 333-4). Standing stone (CO041-04405-) on perimeter of site to NW. Man-made underground passage (CO041-04402-) discovered 28.5m to NW of site.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
