Kilcolgan Castle

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Kilcolgan Castle stands as a square bawn with two corner towers, its fortified house destroyed in the 1950s to supply rubble for a power station. The remaining towers reveal circular interiors and angular outward projections, while a machicolation on the south wall hints at the lost entrance defended above. Rinuccini passed through in 1648, marking the place as a Mac Coghlan stronghold during a turbulent year. What remains is both a ruin and a warning about how quickly useful stone becomes somebody else’s progress.
Kilcolgan Castle is recorded as a archaeological place in County Offaly. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
