Kathleen Lonsdale

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Kathleen Yardley arrived in Newbridge in 1903 to become the youngest of ten children in a postmaster's house where four siblings died before she drew her first breath. She grew up beside Church of Ireland bells and Methodist Sunday schools while her father's drinking drained the family ledger, until political unrest and hardship drove her mother across the sea in 1908. The girl who left that town became the crystallographer who flattened benzene in mathematical fact and broke every gendered ceiling in British science.

Why this person is known: Irish crystallographer (1903-1971)
