John Boyle O'Reilly was born at Dowth Castle in County Meath on 28 June 1844, the third child of a headmaster and a woman tied to Irish nationalism. That house sat inside a country still strangling under British rule, so a boy raised there learned resistance before he learned patience. He carried that learning into armies, prisons and oceans until it broke open in American pages.
