Inveraray Castle, Kirkapoll Cross

Cross (medieval)

What is recorded here

Kirkapoll Cross stands beside Inveraray Castle in Argyll and Bute, a medieval marker still visible where human hands first shaped the land. The castle rose later, but the cross belonged to an older faith and a world that measured life through prayer rather than pride. That much is clear. What is missing is the voice of the person who chipped the stone, the child who ran past it, the stranger who read its shape and knew at once that this valley had been sacred before it became famous.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Inveraray Castle, Kirkapoll Cross as Cross (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Inveraray Castle was built by the Campbell family, specifically commissioned by the 1st Duke of Argyll, in the 18th century. It is important as a historic seat of the powerful Clan Campbell and as an example of 18th-century Scottish baronial architecture.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
