Inveraray Castle and its associated garden were built by the Campbell family, specifically commissioned by the 1st Duke of Argyll, in the 18th century. The castle and its formal gardens are important as a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture and as the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Argyll, the hereditary chiefs of Clan Campbell.
