Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland. It appeared on the 1842 map as a circular enclosure thirty-five metres wide, but ploughs and people erased most of that shape. A low rise still traces the south bank eastward, and stones scatter across the field like forgotten words. The fort has lost its wall, yet it keeps its name and refuses to stop marking the land.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m); as circular field boundary on later eds OS 6-inch map. Levelled; low rise traces S line of bank to E; stone spread in field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
