What is recorded here
Indicated is a small coastal promontory fort in County Cork, Ireland, where a rectangular area projects southwest from a larger headland entering Bantry Bay. A modern field fence crosses the neck, but beneath it the north cliff still shows the faded line of a silted fosse and its inner bank. Carew wrote of an entrenched headland in 1602, yet Westropp found no such work in 1921, leaving the true shape of the place half-hidden inside rock, soil and time.
Small rectangular area projecting SW from slightly larger headland which projects N into Bantry Bay. Westropp (1921, 105) found no evidence of "entrenched headland" described by Carew in 1602. Modern field fence now runs across neck of headland. Beneath this, on N cliff-face, the profile of a silted-up fosse with a bank on its inside can be seen.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
