What is recorded here

Indicated is a likely crannog buried beneath conifers at the east end of Gortconnellan or Spa Lough in County Leitrim, Ireland. The small sand and gravel island rises only 1.5m above the water, yet its shape and location suggest people built it long before trees obscured the work. It is no longer a home, workshop or refuge in any visible way, but the lake still holds the outline of human intention. What was made there has returned to shadow, leaving only a green mound where clever hands once resisted the water.

Located towards the E end of Gortconnellan or Spa Lough, a rectangular lake (dims c. 550m ENE-WSW; c. 230-300m NNW-SSSE). This is an overgrown island of sand and gravel (dims 28m N-S; 23.5m E-W; H 1.5m) which has been planted with coniferous trees. There is no visible surface evidence of artificial construction, but its origin as a crannog is very likely.
