Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular earthen ringfort on a south-west facing slope in County Monaghan, measured at thirty-five metres across and marked as a fort on an 1834 map. A derelict house stands beside it, bearing a small cup mark on a window lintel, while the grassy interior remains bounded by a low bank and hedge rather than a grand entrance. The fort may have served as a seasonal shelter, a boundary marker or a forgotten home, its purpose softened by time but its shape still clear on the land.
Situated on a SW-facing slope. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘fort’ in gothic lettering. This is a circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 25.8m N-S; c. 24m E-W) sloping down slightly to the SW defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 1.2m) and hedge NE-S-SW and slight traces of a scarp elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or entrance. A single cup mark (diam. 0.15m; D 4cm) is visible on a lintel stone of a window in the SW wall of the derelict house standing immediately adjacent to the perimeter at NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 30 January 2018
