Fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Dooneen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a narrow E-W ridge in undulating pasture. Raised circular platform (diam. 27m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 4.6-5.6m; int. H 0.7-0.9m; ext. H 1.4m at E, 2.2m at W). At the external foot of the bank at SW-NW is a fosse (Wth 3m; ext. D 0.9m) with a low counterscarp bank (Wth 3m; ext. H 0.3m). These latter two features are not evident for the remainder of the circuit. There is a break (Wth 1.2m) in the bank at NE and another (Wth 2.6m) at S. In the interior there is a roughly square depression (max. dim. 4m; D 0.4m) against the inner face of the bank at SW. At S a limestone quarry, now disused, encroaches to within 1m of the rath.

Explorer Tom Fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Rinroe has strict rules for visitors: no shoes, no talking about politics, and definitely no touching the bank because it’s got feelings. It’s wide and low with a shallow external fosse, which makes it look like a giant doughnut that forgot to get filled with cream properly. Go back in winter, it's a different animal.

Enclosure in DooneenEnclosure · 789 yd

Explorer Tom Enclosure in Dooneen started because two lads bet a pint that they could build a circle out of mud before the rain stopped. They lost the bet, the rain won, and now it’s been levelled so flat you’d need a magnifying glass to spot it. Grand place for a sulk or a snog, your call.

Killanly Church (Castleconor)Church/chapel · 1049 yd

Explorer Tom Killanly Church in Castleconor would ace any job interview because it’s robust, simple, and never misses a deadline. It’d tell them it has great gatekeeping skills and a solid window-to-door ratio. Why this place matters is that it doesn’t need a resume to look impressive, mate.

MoysdaleRectory/glebe/vicarage/curate's house · 1251 yd

Explorer Tom Moysdale, the former rectory, once saw a vicar accidentally set the bow window slating on fire with a candle. It retains sash windows and curved slate details that survived that dramatic incident. Watch for any lingering smoke signals from the roofline today.

Rinnachurry PointHeadland · 1.2 miRosserk AbbeyVisitor attraction · 1.2 miCastleCastle, unclassified · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in County Sligo would win a county fair prize for 'Best Hidden Object' without even trying. It’s another mystery box that won’t open, sitting there smugly while we scratch our heads and wonder what it’s up to. I bet it’s planning a surprise party for the next person who finds it, but they’re already dead. Tell the kids it's a castle. Close enough.

Hawthorn1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Hawthorn was used as a hiding spot for smugglers who were trying to sneak a case of whiskey through its branches. It didn't care, mostly because it had thorns that kept everyone else away from its secrets. Bring a pen pal, they'll be jealous.

Castleconnor (in Ruins)Castle, hall-house · 1.3 miGoose IslandIslet · 1.4 miRinphilip PointHeadland · 1.8 miThe Black PigMemorial · 1.8 mi

Explorer Tom The Black Pig memorial has caused such huge arguments in this parish that half the locals still can't agree if the pig was even real. It’s basically a stone statue of confusion sitting there waiting for someone to finally explain themselves properly. Have a chat with it, nobody's watching.
