Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort in County Longford, Ireland. It holds a circular grassy area beside poor wet pasture, marked by a low earthen bank and a faded entrance gap. People may have lived there, feared it, or simply passed it by before memory changed the meaning of its shape.
On a SW-facing slope in poor, wet pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 23.4m) enclosed by a wide, low bank of earth and stone (Wth 6.2m; H 0.3-1.1m) that has been scarped at SW. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a wide, deep, intervening fosse and an outer bank. The fosse (Wth c. 3.8m) has been infilled for most of its circuit and only its outline is identifiable. The outer bank is not visible. A break (Wth 3.1m) in the bank at SE with an accompanying causeway may mark the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 3 December 2011
