Sir Charles Coote had built a wooden bridge (RO011-151001-) connecting Jamestown with Co. Roscommon by 1622-3 which is depicted on the Down Survey map (1655-6) and was still extant in 1683. It crossed the River Shannon at the S end of Jamestown, but by 1730 it had been replaced by a stone bridge. The present bridge appears to be a 19th century construction built by the Commission for the improvement of the Shannon Navigation. (Bradley and Dunne 1988b, 22-3).
