Sections of town wall, built in 1627 by order of King James I and altered c.1830. Jambs of a town gate survive in the northern section. Parts of town wall to the west, south and eastern perimeters of the town. Walls comprise sandstone rubble with lime mortar. The northern gate has been repaired in the past.

The town wall is of architectural and archaeological significance. It reflects the social history of the town and is a rare example of seventeenth-century urban fortification. The northern gateway is one of the most imposing structures in the town and dominates the entrance to the Jamestown from Carrick-on-Shannon. To celebrate Catholic Emancipation an ornamental arch was added to the gate by the O'Beirne family. This has since been removed.
