Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a faded fairy fort in Cork pasture, marked only by a low rise and a faint external depression. It has no visible wall, gate or chamber, yet the land still bends around its hidden shape. The fort may have been a home, a boundary marker or a forgotten ritual place, but human life has erased most of its evidence. What remains is a subtle oval of soil, waiting for someone to notice the absence of a visible ruin.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 45m E-W; c. 30m N-S) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, incorporated into field fence system on N side; as broken line enclosing circular area (diam. c. 38m) on 1937 OS 6-inch map, to S of E-W field boundary which kinks to respect site. Roughly circular area (34.7m E-W; 29.5m N-S) defined by low rise (int. H 0.05m; ext. H 0.4m); faint trace of external fosse as slight depression WSW->NW. Surrounding field fences removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
