Mill, corn

What is recorded here

Roofless, partially collapsed mill on N bank of Bride River to W of Aghern Castle and House (CO045-02301). Indicated on 1904 and 1935 OS 6-inch maps as L-shaped structure with mill race. T-shaped in plan (long axis N-S), built on slope making it 2-storey at N end with basement-like floor at S end. Wheel-pit (wet) (Wth 2.9m) along S wall. Two sandstone millstones within suggest it functioned as Corn Mill. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
