Humbert Memorial Monument in Ballina was unveiled in 1898, moved in the 1980s and formally dedicated again in 1987. A monument can't even change its address without somebody saying, 'Hold on, I'll get my speech.'
Freestanding monument, erected 1898; unveiled 1898, on a square plan. Repositioned, 1986-7. Rededicated, 1987. Street fronted on cobbled footpath.
A monument erected 'in memory of General [Jean Joseph Amable] Humbert [1767-1823]…and the gallant patriots who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their country' widely regarded as a particularly important component of the commemorative architectural heritage of County Mayo.
